From the Middle English snaile, snayle, from the Old English sne?el, from Proto-Germanic *snagilaz. Cognate with Low German Snagel, Sn�el, Sn�l (�snail�), German Schnegel (�slug�). Compare also Old Norse snigill, from Proto-Germanic *snigilaz.
