From Middle English grounde, from Old English grund, from Proto-Germanic *grunduz, from Proto-Indo-European *g?r?mtu-. Cognate with West Frisian grūn, Dutch grond and German Grund. Non-Germanic cognates include Albanian grundė (“brittle earth”).
