Etymology 1

Borrowed from Dutch gas [1650s], coined by chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont. Probably derived from Dutch chaos (�chaos�), from Ancient Greek ???? (kh�os, �chasm, void, empty space�); perhaps inspired by geest (�breath, vapour, spirit�).
