Borrowed from Anglo-Norman usser, from Old French ussier, uissier (�porter, doorman�) (compare French huissier), from Vulgar Latin *usti?rius (�doorkeeper�), from Latin ?sti?rius, from ostium (�door�). Akin to ?s (�mouth�). Probably a doublet of ostiary and huissier.
